Description

The Paladin is one of the most common classes on Gaheris. Its Large Shield and Chants make it a favorite for groups, so much so that it has been said that it is fotm forever. Its abilities are skewed more towards the defensive, and with a AF Buff, AF Chant and Plate armor it has the highest Armor Factor in the game.

Effects of Specialization

Paladins being on the Hybrid damage table, means that they have notably lower melee damage than Pure Tanks. As such higher specialization in weapon specs does not result in damage that scales as much as other classes.

As such most Paladins opt for a higher Shield Spec. Every point in Shield is a +0.5% increase in block rates. At 42 shield spec is a Any-Time 9 second stun that can be useful if a monster is on another player like a healer or caster.

The Chants line is what makes Paladins unique. In that line they get two chants that no other class gets, a large AF chant, and a pulsing Heal Chant, that works like a small group heal that pulses every 5 seconds. This chant is able to draw considerable aggression onto the Paladin. Also in this line are a Damage Add, Endurance Regen and Resist Chants. It is possible, to keep multiple chants up most of the time and one chant up all of the time. For more on this see "Twisting Chants" below. The last AF Chant is at 48 Chants, most Paladins do not go above 48 Chants, and whether or not it is worth it to go to 48 is a point sorely debated in the community.

It is possible to create a Paladin that is more skewed towards melee damage by speccing for Two Handed weapons, however a Paladin specced in such a manner will not get the damage output of a Pure Heavy Tank such as a Armsman or Warrior

Twisting Chants

Each chant has a 6 second duration and a 8 second recast time. It is possible then to keep multiple chants up most of the time and one chant up all of the time. The usual method of doing this is by "Twisting" the chants, placing the chants to be twisted on the hotkey bar and every 8 seconds tapping each chant's hotkey. In this way the last chant remains up the entire time and the others are up most of the time.

However keep in mind that each Chant with the exception of the Endurance Regen chant consume a small amount of Endurance each time they are cast, if there is Endurance left. The Endurance Regen chant will consume a little power each time it pulses, which happens 6 seconds after it is casted. By placing the Endurance Regen chant at the beginning or middle of the twist the Paladin can use no power and gain back a little endurance, and still have enough endurance to style every other swing, depending on how many chants are used.

The disadvantage of having too many chants is that it will leave little to no endurance left for styling, and reduce the Paladin's damage even more. As such most Paladins will only twist three or four chants, the usual ones chosen are AF, Damage Add, Endurance and Heal. With heal being last so it gets the opportunity to pulse once more roughly doubling the amount of healing gotten out of the chant.

Suggested Specializations

48 Chant/50 Shield/32 Slash/2 Parry

This is a spec for a shield Paladin that did not auto-train. It also provides for the very last AF chant. Using this spec the Paladin will spend most of his time twisting and spamming Amy Slash.

48 Chant/50 Shield/29 Slash/13 Parry

Similar spec but it will get you a little more defense. This is a fairly common group-oriented spec on Gaheris, as it has access to the excellent [29] Amethyst Slash, and exchanges the marginal weaponskill and style damage gain of 32 Slash for 11 additional points in Parry.

PvE Utility

The Paladin is likely the most popular defensive tank on Gaheris, with Warriors perhaps a close second. The Paladin's plate armor, potentially high Shield skill, and Chants provide a unique combination of abilities that makes them ideally suited for main tanking in virtually any situation. Their Endurance chant is welcome (and usually expected) in groups, and their Heal chant enables them to easily acquire and maintain aggression from multiple mobs.
