Description
The necromancer is a passive character until it calls upon the dark magic of Arawn to transform itself into a fearsome servant controlled by an ethereal shade. All combat and casting is performed by the servant as commanded by the shade. Should this servant form be destroyed the necromancer becomes a weak and powerless. (Description from the Camelot Herald)
Necromancers are considered the most powerful soloer in the game today, and their group contributions include Power Transfer or PBAOE depending on their specialization. Many are used to farm money and items due to their nearly zero downtime, and powerlevel other toons very rapidly due to the ability to tackle oranges and even reds without too much effort.

One major attribute that's not listed as important is Constitution. Your pet's health points are determined by your unbuffed Constitution. This means you can wear gear or buy the Toughness Realm Ability that increases your hit points to increase the pet's hit points.
Effects of Specialization
There are basically two specs that are what would be considered 'cookie-cutter', using either can be very effective.
The Deathsight spec is a spec with nearly no downtime, particularly when fighting spirit weak mobs.
Deathsight - 48
Deathservant - 24
Painworking - 6
The Deathservant spec is generally used in combination with a cleric bot that purchased at least the second level of the Divine Intervention Realm Ability. This setup means a Deathservant necromancer can either take large groups of monsters (10 - 20 easily) at a time, in the blue and yellow range, or take higher level monsters that are generally considered unsoloable.
Deathservant - 47
Deathsight - 25
Painworking - 8
Generally, the way to spec is to go full Deathsight until you reach 40. At 40 you'll have to decide whether you want to be a Deathsight or Deathservant Necromancer. You can use your free single line respec to take those points out of Deathsight and put them into Deathservant, if you desire.
If one has access to a cleric bot (or full enhance cleric friend) with Divine Intervention 2, Deathservant is a lot of fun to play. Nothing like watching 10+ monsters drop at your feet. It's a specialization with a lot of timing to it and if you are one who really likes a challenge, Deathservant can be the way to go.
If you're a person who wants to use a minimal amount of strategy to get something done, Deathsight is very straightforward. And that power transfer makes grouping with healer-types and pbaoe-types a lot of fun, you act as a battery, keeping everyone in power, especially during critical times.
Playing Strategies
Facilitate Painworking (FP) is your version of Quickcast for other mage-type classes. It's a lot nicer in my opinion because it lasts 6 seconds, rather than only working for a single spell. To use it effectively, press it immediately after your pet swings then immediately press the spell you want to cast without being interrupted. You'll in effect have two spells that are queued to wait until the pet is done with it's current action. Once the pet starts to cast, press the spell button again, and some people can even get a third cast in before the Facilitate Painworking spell drops off.
Deathsight:
The basic strategy involves just two spells, your powertap and your instant lifetap. You pull with your powertap spell, which costs some mana, but returns a whole lot more than it takes to cast, thus regenerating your power while it decreases the targets hit points. If the target lasts long enough to reach you, you spam the instant lifetap until dead. Rinse and repeat. In a particularly tough fight, you can use your Facilitate Painworking to cast a couple more powertaps, in a hope to regen some power if you're starting to run low.
Deathservant:
The basic strategy here is to use the ae str/con debuff in your Painworking specialization line to pull several monsters at a time. Start slowly until you get a feel as to what you can handle. As they are coming to you cast your damage shield and wait until all the monsters are on your pet. Watch closely that monsters don't head towards your bot, if they do cast your Painworking ae str/con debuff on them. Once they are all attacking your pet recast the damage shield and when you see it go off on your pet watch for the pet to swing, then hit Facillitate Painworking (FP) and your pbae, once you see the pet begin to cast the pbae hit it again. If you have enough dex in your suit and red cleric buffs with +25% buff enhancement you should be able to get off 3 pbaes. Continue to cast the damage shield every 25 seconds or so, you really shouldn't need to cast your FP/pbae any more than the 3 initial times. There is a bit of strategy with your bot as well, some people cast Divine Intervention (DI) then wait for the 10 minute recast to expire before pulling. In this manner, if you take enough damage to burn through the DI that is currently on, you have the other ready to cast. Since DI puts the healing aggro on your pet, instead of your bot, after the first time it heals your pet it is fairly safe to let your bot put in a straight heal or two. If you can manage it get a friend, or use a third account, to add a Mana Mentalist to your group. This will allow you to drop your bot out of group so it is in no danger, and the mentalist can stay out of group as well, which is the ideal PL setup with only the necromancer and the person being PL'd in the group.
