About Cabalists

Cabalists are mages that have joined the Guild of Shadows. The order has taught them many powerful and destructive methods of using magic against their enemies. Cabalists can summon various pets to do their bidding, as well as painful acids which do damage over time. They can drain life from their foes while sacrificing their own life to heal others. They can blind and disease enemies, and use a variety of other debuff spells. One never knows quite which tool the Cabalist is going to choose.

Specializations

Cabalists have three spec lines - spirit, matter, and body. The spirit spec'd Cabalist basically becomes a buffer for their pet. It's a popular spec for soloing, as Cabalists are one of DAoC's better soloers. The Matter spec gives some nasty DoTs and the focus damage shield which is a bit weaker than a Enchanters. The Body spec has some seriously nasty Lifetaps. Body spec'd Cabalists can do a lot of damage, particularly in groups, where a heavy tank will keep aggro off the Cabalist. Using strong Lifetaps is not recommended for soloing Cabalists, because you will steal aggro from the pet and die in about two hits.

Popular specs include: Matter - 41 Spirit - 35 Body - 3 (Most agree that the level 50 focus damage shield is too costly power-wise for the small damage gain)

Spirit - 46 Body - 28 Matter - 4 (Highest level Body debuff - most of our damage is Body based - and great pet buffs)

Body - 45 Spirit - 22 Matter - 19 (Seriously nasty lifetaps, but be careful, you will probably pull aggro from pet and have to kite)

Pets

Cabalists get 5 pets with various strengths: Level 1: Amber Simulacrum - This is the first one you use, and it procs a stun occasionally while hitting. Level 7: Ruby Simulacrum - Has it's own Damage Add and procs a Fire DD spell. Level 12: Sapphire Simulacrum - Has it's own Lifetap (that heals the pet, not the Cabalist) Level 20: Emerald Simulacrum - Has a poison/disease proc Level 32: Jade Simulacrum - Has a self damage shield

Cabalists also get a spell to heal the pets and one that will allow them to "recycle" the pet called Convert Spirit. A portion of the power used to cast the pet is returned to the Cabalist, the amount is based on the hit points of the pet, so generally the Amber is used for recycling. Cabbys low on power can use this to regen power faster than just sitting. Most cabalists use this instead of spending points on the Realm Ability (RA) Mystic Crystal Lore. This allows them to spend more points on Serenity (if focus damage shield is their weapon of choice) or higher levels of Juggernaut, allowing a short-term increase in the pet's level for fighting purposes. This allows the pet to easily take down red, and sometimes purple mobs. Most don't buy Juggernaut past level 2, due to the pet level cap of 70, but if one has skill points burning a hole in one's pocket, Juggy 3 is termed 'beastly'. If one is going down the body route, RAs might include Wild Power, Augmented Acuity, and Mastery of Magery, increasing the damage from lifetaps and dots. These have no effect on focus damage shield, for those matter cabalists out there. Most Cabalists take the Convoker route for master levels, as well, giving them essentially two separate Juggernauts at ML9, if they have the Juggernaut realm ability. The ML9 pet is max level 64. Wild Minion is another popular RA choice, though the bulk of a cabalist's damage comes either from focus damage shield or those powerful dots and lifetaps.

For soloing, use the Sapphire Sim. Since he has a lifetap that allows him basic self-healing, you have to heal less often, and thus are less likely to generate aggro and die. For going after multiple, low-level mobs, use the Amber - he's got a lot of hitpoints. If you need to kite mobs, use the Ruby - he's got low HP, but because he casts the heat-based DD, he's the pet of choice for this manoeuver. Most folks say the Jade Sim is rather useless.

Suggested Specializations

50 spirit, 20 body, 4 matter This spec gives all the top pet buffs and magic debuffs. With a little +buff gear and Wild Minion, this is one nasty simalcrum, able to defeat most orange con mobs on its own with no intervention from the cabalist. Despite only 20 trains in body magic, the lifetaps are surprisingly strong when the target is body debuffed, typically landing for 450-500 damage against red and lower mobs.
