Abilities/Guard
From GaherisWiki
The guard ability allows a character to potentially block attacks on another player if they have a shield equipped.
The level of Guard ability (I, II, III) is based on Shield skill. Each level grants 5% chance to block for the target you are guarding, when they stand close enough to the shield bearer.
The % chance to effectively Guard is also based off the shield bearer's DEX stat and any modifications they have from equipment (+blocking %) and Realm Abilities (Mastery of Blocking). Guard is used in mostly in two situations, for another tank (tanks cross guard when they all guard one another), or to guard a high damage but high risk class (PBAoE'r). A *Good* tank will have guard on his hotbar though because swapping a guard to an aggro'd healer can pull your ass out of the fire in many situations. -Valkriin.
The % chance is also affected if the Guard is using his Engage Ability. Most Tanks don't know this and prefer to hit the mobs but while guarding a PBAE it is at least for a Paladin who generates the aggro with the healchant usually more useful to abjure the melee damage and increase the chance that the PBAE doesn't get interrupted. Activating Engage requires to have a target. It is meant to target a mob and then hit Engage but in reality it is most useful to target a player from your group and then hit Engage. This prevents Engage from stopping after the mob you have targeted dies.
Sidenote: With my Paladin I usually set up guard, protect, healchant and engage (mostly with my Cleric as target) and then bodypull mobs or use the tauntspell (which doesn't end Engage). -Sperber/Wulven <Eisdrachen>
